Harold Wilson MP (Leader of the Opposition) STUDIO interview SOT
- On his meeting with the miners ... questions about picketing, keeping discipline
- They don't want a strike, we don't want a strike, the country doesn't want a strike ... it looks as though the problem is rushing on like an express train, the one man who can apply the brakes or the signal, the Prime Minister, is remaining in his rigid posture
- On the relativities report ... For a year nobody has been running the country... the payboard have taken all that time, in wartime it would have been speeded up ... now it means a very long process, i hoped they could have got together on a short one-off operation last week to study the importance of relativities, a year ago I proposed a royal commission ... to look at anomalies and special cases ...If the government were to agree to an offer over and above the coal board's offer ... put that on the table and say you get this anyway...meanwhile we set up Coal Commission ...
- ... Mr Whitelaw could settle it at the stroke of a pen ... Waiting time ... Clause about overtime refers to net of meal breaks, miners do not have expense account lunches underground, they haven't got a works canteen, they're sitting there in acutely uncomfortable conditions eating coaldust sandwiches for 20 minutes a day ... I believe that could lead to a settlement within 48 hours
- On support he would give to miners if general election is set ... Election would be about prices and rents, cost of living, and our alternative proposals ...
