Scientists Set Up Carbon Dioxide Detectors
American scientists, Professor George Kling (L) and Bill Evans (R) of the US Geological Service, work with Cameroonian scientist Paul Nia (front) to load software that will enable them to dowload data from the CO2 detectors which monitor gas emanation from the Lake. The detectors are linked to this early warning alarm system so that villagers living nearby will be warned of any dangerous gas coming from Lake Nyos. The gas asphyxiated 2000 people when it was released from Lake Nyos in a dense cloud in 1986. (Photo by Louise Gubb/Corbis via Getty Images)
