387938 02: Chinese President Jiang Zemin is greeted by 74 year old Cuban President Fidel Castro April 13, 2001 at the Council of State building in Havana, Cuba. This was Jiang's fifth stop along his 6 nation tour of Latin American countries. China is Cuba's 4th largest trading partner: $520 million U.S.dollars in the year 2000. Cuba is a useful economic springboard into the Caribbean basin for China. On this trip, the Chinese leader will sign a low interest loan agreement for the island worth $400 million. Chinese and Cuban state companies have already signed agreements on telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, electronics, hotels, rice, farming and textiles.
