Democratic Alliance Comes Ahead At Portugal's 2024 Early Legislative Elections

LISBON, PORTUGAL - MARCH 10: Democratic Alliance supporters crowd the room as they watch on TV words from Portuguese PM Antonio Costa while waiting for the President of PSD and leader of Democratic Alliance (AD) Luis Montenegro to give the victory speech at elections night HQ at Sana Hotel after AD proclaimed victory on March 10, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal. Montenegro said speaking to supporters that "to win is to have one more vote," and called for dialog among Portuguese political parties. He insisted that there will be no political alliance with far-right Chega, that came in in a strong 3rd place with up to 44 MPs in the new Portuguese Parliament. In a speech conceding defeat Socialist leader Pedro Nuno excluded left-wing majority from governance. Portuguese early legislative elections were hold on March 10, 2024 with all the Parliament's 230 seats being at stake. Portuguese crisis began on November 7, 2023, when the Public Prosecutor's Office ordered a search that included the Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action and the Ministry of Infrastructure, while investigating active and passive corruption and prevarication in relation to concessions for lithium mining in northern Portugal, a project for a green hydrogen production plant and a project for a data center. This led to the resignation of Antonio Costa and the fall of Portugal's XXIII Constitutional Government. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decreed the dissolution of parliament on January 15, previously announced on November 09, 2023, and the calling of early legislative elections.
