AIDS In Asia
ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA ? APRIL 16: In this particular community northeast of the state capital Hyderabad, sex workers wait for customers April 16, 2004 in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Virtually everyone was born as the result of liaisons between sex workers and their clients. Nearly all the males leave to work elsewhere, while the females stay and become sex workers themselves. In the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh there are many communities of sex workers situated next to main highways, servicing truck drivers. A million people in the Asia and Pacific region became infected with HIV in 2003, while more than half a million people died from AIDS-related causes. UNAIDS says the appalling figures will be higher in 2004. (Photo by Palani Mohan/Getty Images)
