EL SALVADOR-PRISON-OVERPOPULATION
Members of the MS-13 gang infected with tuberculosis, are pictured at Chalatenango prison, 84 km north of San Salvador, on March 29, 2019. - Central American countries bear a prison population of 134,800 inmates, who despite the construction of new infrastructure, are kept cramped in jails, in some cases exceeding African average detention rates, this is because these countries' justice system privileges confinement to alternative measures even in minor crimes. The countries with the highest imprisonment rates are those which form the Northern Triangle of Central America, comprising Guatemala with 24,681 inmates, El Salvador with 40,090, and Honduras 21,052, together they account for the 63.6% of the regional total of prisoners. Out of the 85,823 total prisoners of the Northern Triangle, 19,840 (23.1%) are gang members. (Photo by MARVIN RECINOS / AFP) (Photo credit should read MARVIN RECINOS/AFP via Getty Images)
