No lowering of Communist Party red flags

BEIJING, CHINA: No lowering of Communist Party red flags on the rostrum above Tiananmen Gate in central Beijing, 17 January 2005, after China's state-controlled media today confirmed the death of former leader Zhao Ziyang, 85. The reformist leader, who served as head of the Communist Party and China's prime minister for much of the 1980s, was purged for opposing the 1989 military crackdown on the Tiananmen Square democracy movement and spent the last 16 years of his life under house arrest in Beijing.
