Sufism in Pakistan
SEHWAN SHARIF, PAKISTAN - SEPTEMBER 2006: Self mutilation of Shi'as, during the annual ceremony of Urs of Lal Shabaz Qalandar at the entrance of his shrine, September, 2006 in Sehwan Sharif, Pakistan. Born as Seyed Shah Hussain (Usman) Marandi, he later on titled as Lal (red) Shahbaz ( Falcon) Qalandar (as he belonged to Qalandria order of sufism). He was a 13th century Sufi Master and he has been worshiped alike by Hindus and Muslims. While some devotees belonging to different sect of sufism celebrate his death as his reunion with god by performing Dhmal, an ecstatic dance, others beloging to mainstream Shi'a, seek to emulate his suffering by self mutilation and slapping their chests to show their grieving.
