The execution of five Chinese found guilty of subversive political activity in Shanghaï as the city prepared to defend itself against advancing communist armies. This execution followed the traditional method of shooting prisoners in the back, as their arms were tied to a stake on which a paper listed the crimes of which they were found guilty.
