In 784 Abd al-Rahman I ordered construction of the Great Mosque, which was considerably expanded by later rulers and later turned into a Cathedral. Great Mosque has the most columns in a mosque in the world. The Great Mosque of Cordoba was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1984 by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The Mosque has 1293 columns, 19 parallel paths consisted of columns intersecting 36 other paths with right angle. Columns support the arches made of bricks and white stones.
