Ayub Khan (President of Pakistan, 1958 - 1969) interview SOT
- People felt a good country was being ruined by people responsible for running the country, question of saving the future of this country, declared an emergency, advocated the constitution, had to declare martial law / Yes (I plan to restore democracy), bring democracy down to the lowest level, so they are associated with their administration, feeling of participation, hope these elected people will form the electoral college for the election of parliament and president
- Wouldn't force my ideas on anybody / Before this democracy can be established, government has to be strong enough to eradicate other evils, without land reforms, legal, education reforms, you haven't relieved the people of normal anxieties, to think of the future
- By the end of 1960 we should have democracy installed in full, as soon as parliament meets that will be the time to withdraw martial law
- (Response to be called a military dictator) Bloody rubbish / Descibe myself as a citizen of Pakistan who feels for this country, knows problem, have got to advance under democratic set-up
