1914 Boston Braves
(Original Caption) Boston, Massachusetts: The biggest upset in the first half of the 20th century was what this 1914 Boston Braves team was voted in a poll of sports writers. Top inserts (L-R): Captain John J. Evers,; Manager George T. Stallings; President James E. Gaffney and Secretary Herman Nickerson. Back row (L-R): James, Catler, Deal, Davis, Cottrell, Cocrehan, Hess, Mann Gowdy, Schmidt, and Whaling. Middle row (L-R): Wittled, Dugey, Tyler, Strand, Devore, Gilbert, Smith and Moran. Front row (L-R): Connelley, Mitchell, Willie Connor, Rudolph Maranville, Crutcher, Martin and Evers. On July 4th, this Braves team was in last place in the National League - they came roaring on not only to win the National League pennant, but knocked the vaunted A's off, 4 straight in the Series. No wonder it's called "Stalling's Miracle Team."
