Representatives Dellums and Stokes Speak to Media

U.S. House Representatives Ron Dellums (D-CA) and Louis Stokes (D-OH) speaking to media on the U.S. invasion of Grenada. Rep. Stokes continues speaking on the topic of the U.S. invasion of Grenada. In their opinion, the U.S. was responding to the requests of regional Caribbean states. Having American students on the island gave the U.S. the credibility it needed to invade. Even if the students had not been on the island, the U.S. would still have likely invaded. There are other issues to address, such as the U.S. role in Grenada post-invasion. U.S. military presence continues there, despite the students being evacuated. This is presence is now felt in the towns and cities where they are accusations against the U.S. of illegal search and seizures within people's homes. There is also the economic problem created after bombing a mental institution. Grenadians expect the U.S. to complete an airport meant for commercial, not military use. Furthermore, after Cuban doctors and teachers were evacuated, there is now a shortage of doctors and teachers on the island. As a consequence, a popular adult literacy program no longer exists. Rep. Stokes yields to Rep. Dellums.
