Lebanese protesters demand release of Georges Abdallah kept in French prison

SIDON, LEBANON - JANUARY 31: Lebanese protesters gathered in Sidon city on Monday, Jan. 31, demanding release of a man dubbed Europe’s longest-serving political prisoner who has been serving a life sentence in France.The protesters gathered outside the city's cinema hall, where the French Ambassador to Beirut Anne Grillo was meeting with some politicians and NGO representatives.Eyewitnesses told police intervened in protesters and there were clashes between them.Protesters claimed that prisoner Georges Ibrahim Abdallah has been held in prison although he has completed his 37th year of imprisonment.Abdallah remains in prison despite completing the minimum term of his sentence, according to his friends and relatives.He was part of the left-wing Lebanese National Movement and later joined the Palestinian resistance.
