Lunar surface. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) view of the moon, zooming out from Tycho Crater. This impact crater is in the southern lunar highlands. Material collected from it during the Apollo 17 mission dates its formation to approximately 108 million years ago, making it relatively young. The central peak (seen here) measures 1.6 kilometres tall. Zooming out and across the lunar surface, the Aristarchus Plateau comes into view. This is a bright feature on the northwest part of the Moon's near side. Infrared imaging shows the mineral pyroxene in orange, and plagioclase in blue from the Aristarchus Crater; data obtained by the Diviner multispectral radiometer carried by LRO. The LRO, which orbits the Moon, was launched on 18th June 2009
