The Icelandic explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni and his wife Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir landing on the shore of Vinland (presumably the areal of Newfoundland and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence as far as northeastern New Brunswick). Around the year 1010 AD, he followed Leif Eriksson's route to Vinland, in a short-lived attempt to establish a permanent settlement there with his wife and followers, approximately five centuries prior to the voyages of Christopher Columbus and John Cabot.
