CLIPPERTON, PASSION ISLAND

Overview of the Clipperton atoll located in the eastern Pacific. The island's area is 6 sq. km including 2 sq. km of emerged land. It has a fresh water lagoon that is enclosed and cut off from the ocean by a narrow bar of land (coral). During violent storms, the waves overflow into the lagoon. The atoll is surrounded by a coral shelf which is exposed at low tide. The island encompasses at its South-East end a volcanic rock (29 meters high). Elle comporte un lagon d'eau douce fermé et isolé des masses océaniques entouré d'une bande étroite de terre (corail). Lors des fortes tempêtes, les vagues débordent dans le lagon. L'atoll est entouré d'un plate-forme coralienne exposée à marée basse. L'île englobe à son extrémité Sud-Est un rocher d'origine volcanique (29m).
