LYMPHOCYTE, NEUTROPHIL and EOSINOPHIL---THREE DIFFERENT TYPES of WHITE BLOOD CELLS or LEUKOCYTES, 400X. The LYMPHOCYTE is on the left and is classified as an agranulocyte (along with the monocyte) lacking discrete granules in the cytoplasm (Agranulocytes). The nucleus is not lobed, and fills a good portion of the cell in lymphocytes. LYMPHOCYTES function in very complex ways in IMMUNITY, including production of Antibodies (B Lymphocytes) and T Lymphocytes (Killer T Cells). The center cell is a NEUTROPHIL that shows a lobed or segmented nucleus. Neutrophils are a first line of defense against invaders of the body like pathogenic bacteria. They are excellent PHAGOCYTES. The cytoplasm of the neutrophil has granules and neutrophils are considered GRANULOCYTES. The cell on the right is an EOSINOPHIL and shows very large, reddish granules, hence they are granulocytes. Eosinophils have many complex functions and play a role in combating PARASITIC INVASIONS and they are involved in ALLERGIES like asthma. This blood smear also shows numerous red blood cells (Erythrocytes) and a small, purple platelet in the right, lower corner.
