Acropora Corals In The Tatakoto Lagoon

TATAKOTO, FRENCH POLYNESIA - DECEMBER 20: (AUDIO OMITTED) Corals like Acropora create a three-dimensional structure, providing numerous hiding spots for reef fish on December 20, 2021 in Tatakoto, French Polynesia. Corals located very close to the surface don't need many zooxanthellae to survive as they are exposed to very high light conditions. As a result, they have a naturally light color. The corals of Tatakoto have developed a unique resistance to extreme temperatures, a rare trait that could help restore degraded reefs. Thanks to the 1 OCEAN missions and the support of UNESCO, their upcoming transplantation to Moorea will assess their ability to thrive beyond their native atoll. (Footage by TAM PROD/Getty Images)
