Kanvarias are devotees of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva who participate in the Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage to collect sacred Ganga water from pilgrimage sites like Haridwar and Gaumukh to offer at their local Shiva temples. They are named after the "kānvar" (or kavad), a pole with two water pots dangling from it, which is balanced on their shoulders to carry the holy water. This pilgrimage takes place during the holy month of Shravan and is a significant act of devotion and endurance, with pilgrims often traveling long distances on foot.
