An elderly man resting on a covered wagon while looking up at a starry night sky 插畫檔

This evocative nineteenth-century wood engraving depicts a serene nocturnal scene centered on an old, bearded traveler sitting at the front of a traditional covered ox-wagon, or kakebeenwa. The man, dressed in rugged pioneer attire with a wide-brimmed hat, rests his hands in his lap and gazes thoughtfully toward a vast expanse of stars filling the night sky. The open back of the canvas-topped vehicle reveals stored household goods, tools, and baskets, suggesting a life on the move or an evening during a long trek. Set against a dark, rolling landscape with silhouettes of native trees and a simple thatched-roof structure in the background, this illustration captures a quiet moment of reflection during the historical migration and pioneer era in South Africa, using delicate stippling and fine parallel lines to create atmospheric depth and the soft glow of a starlit night.
