Man using a "thong drill" (also known as a strap drill or cord drill) to generate friction. By pulling a cord wrapped around a vertical wooden spindle, the user rotates the spindle rapidly against a wooden base. This intense friction creates heat and eventually an ember, which can then be used to start a fire.
