Above them lies the inner segment, which features a basal synaptic terminal responsible for signal transmission to bipolar cells, a central region containing the cell nucleus, and an upper portion densely packed with mitochondria to supply energy. The apical end of the inner segment connects to the outer segment via a connecting cilium. The outermost outer segment consists of numerous stacked membranous discs that are rich in photopigments and serve as the critical site for phototransduction
