Daring explorers scaling a rugged volcanic field while thick sulfurous clouds billow from a newly formed crater 插畫檔

Two men carrying sturdy walking sticks trek across a vast and treacherous terrain composed of jagged, cooled basaltic lava blocks beneath a towering mountain peak. In the middle ground, massive clouds of white smoke and volcanic steam vent furiously from multiple active fissures across a valley floor, creating a dramatic curtain of vapor that sweeps up the steep slopes of the volcano. This compelling documentary engraving captures a scientific or tourist expedition in Italy during the late nineteenth century, specifically documenting the dramatic formation of the new eruptive vent at the Atrio del Cavallo on Mount Vesuvius.
