Great Diving Beetle Larva (Dytiscus marginalis), showcasing the physical differences between the male and the female of the species 插畫檔
Size: They can grow quite large, reaching up to 60 mm (2.4 inches) in length.Fearsome Jaws: Notice the large, sickle-shaped mandibles in the drawing. These are hollow like hypodermic needles. They inject digestive enzymes into their prey (tadpoles, small fish, or other insects) to liquefy their insides and then suck the "soup" back out.Breathing: Even though they live underwater, they breathe atmospheric air. They do this by hanging upside down and poking the tip of their abdomen (the "tail" in the drawing) through the water's surface.Habitat: You’ll typically find them in freshwater ponds and slow-moving streams across Europe and Northern Asia.
