Methodist founder John Wesley at Gwennap Pit, Cornwall, on one of the 18 occasions when he preached there. Gwennap in the 18th and 19th centuries was the most prolific copper mining district in the county of Cornwall and is now part of the Cornwall and West Devon Landscape World Heritage Site. The ‘pit’ depression was formed by mining subsidence which, after Wesley’s death, was turned into a turf-seated circular terraced amphitheatre. It is still used for Methodist Sunday services in summer. From “The Cottager and Artisan” for 1891, published by The Religious Tract Society, London, with illustrations by various artists.
