Parietal lobe: somatosensory cortex. The parietal lobe of the brain includes the somatosensory cortex: primary somatosensory cortex (at the postcentral gyrus, in light blue) and associative somatosensory cortex (or posterior parietal cortex, in dark blue). The primary somatosensory cortex receives messages from the sensory receptors of somesthesia: touch, proprioception, nociception, temperature. The associative somatosensory cortex (dark blue) plays a fundamental role in voluntary movement, by evaluating the context in which it will be performed.
