Illustration of the human visual pathway, arranged from superior to inferior and anterior to posterior. At the superior aspect, the eyeball contains the inner retina, which transduces light signals into neural impulses. These impulses travel posteriorly through the optic nerve to the optic chiasm, where fibres originating from the nasal retina undergo decussation. Subsequently, the visual signals are transmitted posteromedially via the optic tract to the lateral geniculate nucleus, which serves as a thalamic relay station. Finally, the signals project posterolaterally through the optic radiations to the visual cortex located in the occipital lobe of the brain, thereby completing the processing and perception of visual information
