NAMIBIA-BORDER-WAR-SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR-MT ETJO
South African Foreign Affairs Minister Pik Botha (C) meets delegates from Angola, Cuba, Soviet Union, United States and all other parties involved in trying to salvage the peace process at the Mt Etjo Safari Lodge, on April 8, 1989 near Kalkfeld. On April 1, the date of the implementation of the United Nations resolution 435, around 1,800 armed SWAPO guerrilla fighters crossed the border into Namibia from Angola . During clashes with the security forces lasting nine day's over 260 guerrillas and 27 Namibian police and South African soldiers died.
The meeting became known as the Mount Etjo Declaration and ended with a recommitment from both sides to the peace process and the leader of SWAPO, Sam Nujoma, calling for all SWAPO fighters to return to their bases in Angola.
