Iron Will, The Stacey Kozel Story
MILLINOCKET, ME - AUGUST 27: Stacey Kozel, 41, left, talks with Ranger Jen Sinsabaugh, right, while resting in a lean-to at the Chimney Pond campground in Baxter State Park, Maine at 12:43 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2016. Sinsabaugh explained that the Lead Ranger had advised Stacey not to attempt the summit. they said that search and rescue procedures are expensive, and she will be held financially responsible, if necessary. They also said that they could charge Staceys braces if she would use them to exit the park, rather than continue to the peak. Diagnosed with Lupus at 19, Kozel has been hospitalized countless times with her last flare-up leaving her paralyzed in March 2014. She worked relentlessly at her rehabilitation and regained partial use of her arms and upper core. But her legs remained completely paralyzed. Then, she discovered the Ottobock C-Brace. The braces uses sensors and microprocessors the braces to allow Kozel to achieve a natural gate. She has hiked more than two-thirds of the Appalachian Trail. The climb towards the summit of Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine, and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, is one part of her journey to hike the whole trail.
