Cane Toad 照片檔
The Cane Toad, or Sapo as it is called here is a large toad that is very common in this part of Panama. They usually come out in the evening, eat bugs and hang out and poop in the driveway. These prolific toads were introduced to many countries to help control insects in the sugar cane fields. They quickly multiplied to the point of being classified as an invasive species. Australia is one such country that experienced this problem. They can be deadly to dogs, cats and any other predator who decides to tangle with them. Poison sacks located behind the eyes secrete a toxin that can kill even a large dog in a short period of time. The dog bites the toad, ingests the poison and starts foaming at the mouth. Quick action is required to wash the mouth and rub honey on the gums. if the poison is swallowed you give the dog mustard to induce vomiting and get him to a vet.Fortunately our dogs have shown no interest in these toads.
