Great eggfly (Hypolimnas bolina) 照片檔

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy two metres at 11:00am on Monday 1st June 2026 off Keating cross and Benvenuto Avenue at the Butterfly gardens in Victoria, located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia. Here we see Hypolimnas bolina, the great eggfly, common eggfly, varied eggfly, or in New Zealand the blue moon butterfly, a species of nymphalid butterfly found from Madagascar to Asia and Australia. This one has tattered wings with the white markings all having fallen off. The wings are covered with tiny modified hairs or scales and as the butterfly flaps and flies the scales fall off so their wings wear out over time. Drastic loss of scales will change the aerodynamics of the wing, making flight more strenuous and slow, but a butterfly can still fly with most of its scales missing
